Wayne Rooney’s 34th minute equaliser cancelled out Pedro’s opener in the first half and brought some respite from Barcelona’s relentless attacking. This seemed to hearten United and for a short period the began to fight back. But … the Premier League champions were eventually blown away by the brilliance of their opponents.
Manchester United supporters, and an estimated 300 million tv fans watched in awe as the Barcelona players individually and collectively outran and outplayed all eleven Manchester United players.
The match was billed as a contest between the two top club teams on the planet and Barcelona did not disappoint. Although Manchester United tried and ran hard, they still looked a league apart.
Messi showed why he is held in such esteem, and he also scored his first goal on English soil. His goal (in the 54th minute) was his 100th, scored in the last two seasons. His performance can only be described as – a sublime exhibition of skill, strength and laser sharp finishing.
This now has to be Edwin van der Sar’s penultimate game as the Manchester United goalkeeper. He shouldn’t end his career on such a disappointing night.
