Premiership relegation dance
With another 36 points on the table to play for, it’s a bit too early to predict which clubs will be relegated.
The CALM clubs (Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United) are fighting it out to the bitter end. Manchester City and Tottenham are trying to redraft the well worn Premiership supremacy formula with serious and innovative challenges.
The W clubs are not doing so well and it’s no coincidence that they are juxtaposed at the foot of the Premiership table. Do they all lack the Wright stuff?
That stuff is also called the ‘winning mentality’. These clubs have tried hard to get a foothold on the Premiership ladder but seem to be firmly rooted on the bottom rung all season.
The managers at these clubs all have the football wisdom to guide their club out of the relegation zone but despite their superior workrate their performances have too often been weak and woeful. Part of the problem is usually the way these clubs are run. From the first whistle they often misuse the whopping great sum of £40-80 million which the club get from television and other sources.
Other problems that newly promoted clubs face include burgeoning wages bill, threats from long established predators in the league and unrealistic expectation from their supporters.
As for the new arrivals, Blackpool is an exceptional club. This club sees the Premiership as – just another 19 football teams to get points from.
Clubs of the top of their game can soften the wages conundrum by offering better and long term contracts to their players as soon as they can see the Premiership on the horizon. I’m not talking about wishful thinking but actual promotion potential.
