Starting a weblog

Starting a weblog is easy! The hard part is allocating enough time to it when you have other interests.
Ask yourself this question, ‘Is the weblog for business or pleasure?’.

Try to get your weblog to cover a specific topic as this will help you to focus.

Although I believe in the advice below, I still haven’t put all of this into practice yet. If you do however, your weblog will definitely work for you.

What you need

A domain name

Choose a domain name which complements your weblog. If you can’t get a domain with a single word (like ‘weblog’), use one with a dash in between words (‘fashion-weblog’). Do a thorough check online to make sure that you are not sending traffic to an existing domain (with almost identical name) before you register. Set up your hosting account before you register your domain.

The hosting

Get a good web host (not a free one). There are some charlatans out there who promise lots and deliver a terrible service. Even some of the best/biggest hosting companies have dodgy hosting plans. Before you sign up make sure that you are aware what you pay for monthly or annually. A reasonable hosting fee is between $5 and $10 per month. Some web hosts will sign you up and immediately start adding on all sort of spurious fees. See below for popular hosting companies.

The software you use to post information to your weblog is important. This will determine how much technical input from you is necessary. A list of useful content management systems is at the bottom of the page.

The Theme/Template

There are thousands of free or paid themes available to use. If you don’t have programming/dhtml skills it is important that you find a nice theme which works right out of the box. If it’s a free one, go to the vendors site and check for problems that other users may have had with it before installing the theme.

Search Engine Optimisation

If you are a newbie get some help with SEO. You want people to find your weblog so it’s important that your site is set up properly and able to generate traffic. Considerations must be given to;

  • naming posts
  • categories
  • plugins
  • naming pages
  • static pages
  • dynamic pages
  • meta tags
  • keywords
  • sitemap
  • social bookmarking
  • link building
  • pagerank
  • search engine submissions
  • database storage
  • etc..

  • Articles for your weblog

You can write your own articles/content or use an article depository.
Personally I find it easier to just write what I want ‘because I can’.

Submit your articles to an article directory. Your articles are time stamped and checked for originality so this helps to copyright your articles. It can also get you some much needed traffic as well.

    Useful skills

    Search the web for these topics and learn as much as you can on the following;

  • editing graphics files; gif, jpg, png
  • using photoshop
  • understanding …
  • RSS
  • html/xhtml
  • javascript
  • CSS
  • PHP
  • SQL
  • Social Bookmarking
