Intel’s 2nd Generation Core processor
Intel’s new super-chip, the 2nd Generation Intel Core processor or ‘the Sandy Bridge processor’ is so fast that applications for its use are enormous.
Intel claims the new core pumps out as many as 32 times more pixels per clock than its existing integrated graphics solutions, making it fast enough to render low-end discrete graphics card redundant.
It is aimed at phones, tv’s and cars but could end up in all types of devices.
Intel CEO Paul Otellini’s showed off the next generation of super-chips at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF).
Intel says consultancy IDC predicts that by 2020 there will be 31 billion internet connected devices.
However, the real action in the chip market over the next decade is expected to come from embedded and ultramobile platforms. The super-chip demand will come from HDTVs, cars and inevitably, smartphones.
How about super-chips for useful devices?
WHAT WE WANT
A fridge that can weigh food items, test all contents for freshness, check all use by dates and produce a shopping list. We also want it to produce a shopping list based on menus for 5 (2 adults, 3 children – variable) for a week/month.
TO WHAT END?
This could reduce food waste in a big way. It will also save energy by helping to reduce the number of trips to the supermarkets and reduce vast amounts of packaging. Don’t worry about the supermarkets. They will just increase all food prices by 10% anyway.
A larder that does pretty much the same thing. As well as the capability to scan bar codes and check product ingredients to which you have an allergic reaction.
Cool packaging and bottles/tops which change colour when the bacteria level exceeds the ‘fresh for use’ limit.
A toilet which has at least 2 flush settings or auto-sense to reduce the amount of water used when flushing.
A unit that can filter sink water and recycle it for outside use – ie. gardening, washing bins, washing cars or flushing toilets.
An electronic meter which can indicate unnecessary use of energy in the home. This should list all appliances and where they are in the house.
Solar products that actually work and don’t cost the Earth!
WHEN DO WE WANT IT?
We want it now. Not in the future.
