MHRD have developed a computer for $35/1500INR. The Indian, Ministry of Human Resource Development was created in 1985 to promote ‘the development of the citizen’. MHRD are poised to deliver a computer which can revolutionise the way children are taught in schools. The device will be available in 2011.
The computer is designed for the education market and aimed at just about every child in India. Every child can have one!
The device looks like a stylish i-phone and will have the following specification;
Linux – Operating system
Touchscreen – 5/7/9 inch
Video conferencing facilities
Remote device management capability
Multimedia input-output interface option
Multiple content viewer
The computer will also have the flexibility to switch between solar and battery operated power sources.
The device has some limitations with a smaller memory and no hard disk but the MHRD said it would be sufficient for a student’s needs. This means the device is not meant for high end activities, but for basic school work for grade 7+ student use.
Initially the higher education institutions colleges and varsities will benefit from this technology but with a government subsidy of 50 per cent of the cost, the computer could be made available much cheaper.
Let’s hope it is recyclable and does what it says on the box.
Well done MHRD!…… in anticipation!
