The Premiership is back

Aug 13, 2010 210 Comments by

The Premier League season 2010-11 start in earnest on 14 August 2010. This season the Premiership is under scrutiny more so than any other time in it’s 18 year history.

Clubs have spent heavily on new players (£196.7 million) and are expecting immediate results. Fans will be determined to get value for money after shelling out exorbitant amounts on season tickets, especially at a time when money is tight.

The Premiership seems to be part of a massive financial experiment by the Manchester City owner Sheik Mansour of the Abu Dhabi investment group.
Manchester City has spent over £100m this summer in a bid to win the Barclays Premier League and establish them as a major force in World Football.

By November 2010 everyone will know if a club can buy a Premier League Championship. Manchester City has bought the best available players in the world hoping that they can somehow gel as a team. Is this a dodgy strategy?

Their sternest tests comes on Saturday 14th when the play Tottenham and 23rd August when the play Liverpool. These are the 2 teams which Manchester City will have to beat to establish themselves as a force in the Premiership.

There is no precedent for this type of off pitch strategy but surely it will end in tears for the manager Roberto Mancini and the board at Manchester City.

To begin with, a team has to have a balance, not just a bunch of individuals with fragile, oversized egos. The players are not at fault. They are just following the money. They search for the big pay days because their careers have mostly peaked.
City were bought by the Sheik Mansour’s Abu Dhabi investment company in August 2008 and have subsequently spent more than £200m on players in a bid to get to the apex of the Premier League.
The world’s richest football club lost £92.6m for the financial year ending May 31, 2009.
Sheik Mansour recently sensationally wiped out the club’s £305 million debts. The £305m includes some debt he inherited when buying the club from Thaksin Shinawatra, as well as the purchases of star players like Robinho, Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor.
Sooner or later the Sheikh will want a return on his huge investment and it’s possible that his gamble won’t pay off.

Players in

David Silva Valencia 24m
Yaya Toure Barcelona 24m
Jerome Boateng Hamburg SV’s 11m
Aleksandar Kolarov Lazio 17m
Mario Balotelli Inter Milan 24m
James Milner Aston Villa *** not completed **

Joleon Lescott Everton 22m
Kolo Toure Arsenal 16
Emmanuel Adebayor Arsenal 25m
Robinho 32.5m
Carlos Tevez Manchester United 25m
Roque Santa Cruz Blackburn 18m
Gareth Barry 18m

Kolarov is City’s fourth major signing of the summer, following the purchases of Hamburg SV’s Jerome Boateng, Valencia’s David Silva,Barcelona’s Yaya Toure, and Mario Balotelli from Inter Milan.

This takes the club’s summer spending over the £100m mark.

That figure could soon be £120m, with the club still wanting to add James Milner, Aston Villa midfielder before the transfer window closes in a few weeks.
