Dark Arches Leeds

May 28, 2010 Comments Off by

The Dark Arches are the huge tunnels and vaults that lie beneath the railway viaduct and the City Station. The progressive expansion of the railways over the years has created an incredible network of magnificent marvel. The atmosphere is marvellous on the bridge, particularly when the Aire is in spate and the river thunders through the narrow arches. Looking upstream, a medieval dam still exists, originally diverting water into goits that discharged back in to the river by Leeds Bridge. These goits provided the power for the Manorial Corn Mills. One of the most dramatic and bizarre places in the city, the Dark Arches have been compared with setting from the Lord of the Rings and those by Piranesi.
