The square was opened in 1903 ten years after Leeds became a city. It originally took the form of an elevated circular podium surrounded by a stone balustrade on which were set the morn and eve statues which were relocated in the 1960s.

This modern build contrasts in both architectural form and building materials with its opposite neighbour. Its principal feature is a corner tower feature capped with an Edwardian style dome.

This is a tour de force in terracotta and faience, this time in bright red and pink. The bay windows present some intricate details showing how well clay moulding techniques had advanced by the turn of the 19th century.
